Are Toroidal Transformers And Electronic Transformers Interchangeable?



I bought a quite expensive lamp a few years which has stopped working. i have discovered this is down to the toroidal transformer shorting out.Can i take it out and use an electronic transformer of the same rating or will this not work?

    toriodal only has a donut shape. there is no other difference.

    More information needed.
    I would replace it with the same type. Torroidal Txers are somewhat different to standard Power txers.

    _IF_ the toroid was wired to operate off 50-60 Hz, and you can provide a regular transformer that will deliver the same AC output (both voltage and current capacity), then it should work.
    However, if that toroid is part of a switching power supply, then a conventional transformer will not work.
    So the question remains, is there an assortment of electronic components wired around this toroid? If so, then you would need to obtain a new toroid, or if you have a lot of time on your hands, rewire the existing one. (measure and remove existing wire, noting their arrangement and counting the turns as you go).
    If the toroid is intended to work on 50-60 Hz, then you might have some trouble getting a conventional transformer to fit inside the lamp, but I suppose you could make it external and put it into it’s own box, similar to a modular supply.
